Widely regarded as the oldest form of healthcare in the world, Ayurveda is an intricate and complete medical system that originated in India thousands of years ago.  Though it dates back to the dawn of Humanity, the therapies and practices were created to combat any disease that the body can invent and will most likely still be practiced long after many of the western allopathic methods become obsolete.

Ayurveda is based on the premise that the universe is made up of five elements: air, fire, water, earth and ether.  By understanding the qualities of these elements we can dissect even the most complicated disease into its simplest form and find the root of the disease.  When the elements of the disease are understood and the elements inherent in the individual are accounted for, we can then administer a treatment that is harmonious for the body and disruptive to the disease.

An assessment of the “doshas” is a quick way to check if there are any imbalances within the body.  There are 3 doshas Vata, Pitta, and
Kapha. Each dosha contains a pair of elements. An imbalance of the doshas can cause disease or discomfort and the longer an imbalance is sustained the more serious the disease becomes. When disease is
apparent, one or more of the doshas is either in excess or has been diminished.  By using therapies to build up or reduce a dosha we can bring the body into a more balanced natural state.

A healthy person, as defined in Sushrut Samhita, is "he whose doshas are in balance, appetite is good, all tissues of the body and all natural urges are functioning properly, and whose mind, body and spirit are cheerful."

Ayurveda is a system, which uses the inherent principles of nature, to help maintain health by keeping the individual's body and mind in perfect equilibrium with nature.  In other words, we understand the importance of subtlety in medicine and how that directly correlates with a cheerful life.
